Allegheny Mountain Water Gap

Allegheny Mountain Water Gap: A water gap is a break in a ridge or mountain range formed by a creek or river. They are fascinating examples of the power and persistence of nature and geological processes. One of two things likely happened. 1) the stream or river was present prior to the mountains and as the mountains climbed, the river simply eroded through them, or 2) smaller streams eroded either side of the mountain range, eventually resulting in one stream “capturing” the other. This image was made in the Allegheny Mountains of Eastern West Virginia, within the Monongahela National Forest.
