Allegheny Mountains Divide: Lichen covered boulders, flag trees (red spruce), the Allegheny Mountains, and a cloud-filled sky combine to present this view over the Eastern Continental Divide. The flag trees get their name from the one-sided growth habitat caused by the harsh predominant winds coming from the west. In front of me, to the East of the divide, all precipitation runs off into tributaries that flow to the Atlantic Ocean. Behind me to the west of the divide, runoff heads generally west, eventually ending up in the Mississippi River and/or the Gulf of Mexico. Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia.
