Basking Buzzards: The sight of vultures “sunning” has always struck me as eerie and fascinating and I’ve always wanted to capture it in an image. Here, a handful of black vultures (Coragyps atratus) stretch out their wings to absorb the sun’s radiation on a cool winter morning. Vultures are among a few species of birds that down-regulate their body temperature overnight to save energy, hence the need for additional heat to warm back up in the morning.
