Eastern Fence Lizard: While on a mid-day hike in West Virginia I relaxed briefly on the rocks of a valley overlook when this male Eastern fence lizard snuck into my peripheral vision. It was in its ultimate habitat, a mature forest with a sun-exposed rock for basking. I encountered it during the breeding season when it exhibited the bright blue coloring on its throat. While it cast a cautious glare, it was a generally cooperative subject as I slowly moved around for a natural light portrait.
