Nebula Ice Abstract: This cosmic-looking scene isn’t really cosmic at all but instead was formed at the base of a small waterfall in a recess cave in Hocking Hills. As water splashed away from the waterfall it landed on the vertical face of an adjacent sandstone boulder, forming a thin film of liquid water. As the film settled down the rock face it formed and froze in wavy patterns, catching reflections of daylight entering the recess. The water also picked up dust and air, forming the splashes of color and speckling. In some places the ice picked up reflections of the sky which when combined with the brownish cast of the recess yielded a purplish wash. In other places the natural sandstone colors dominated.
