A pre-sunrise view of the smokey mountains of North Carolina as seen from within Great Smokey Mountain National Park. Why do distant mountains look blue (or violet)? The answer is Rayleigh scattering and it is the same reason the sky appears blue. White light from the sun enters the atmosphere but the shorter (blue and violet) wavelengths get scattered more by the nitrogen molecules in the air. Other colors pass relatively unimpeded to the ground so our eyes end up seeing the blues and violets that are bouncing around. The further the mountain, the bluer they look.
