Together (Companion Trees)

Fine art black and white photography prints of an image of two trees standing close together overlooking a foggy lake.
Together: Two pin oaks (Quercus palustris) stand together seemingly with their arms around each other as they overlook a foggy lake. Do you love to share your outdoor adventures? I savor my solitude but nature treks with family and friends are just as prized.

Even in this distant black and white view, you could guess that these trees are pin oaks. How? Upward angled upper branches, horizontal middle branches, and downward angled lower branches are very characteristic of this species. Scarlet oak can look similar but their preferred habitats are quite different. Pin oaks prefer floodplains, wetlands, and other areas with relatively moist soils. If you see an oak tree in a bottomland area with lower branches pointing at the ground, it’s probably a pin oak. Scarlet oaks on the other hand prefer dry ridgetops, bluffs, and hilltops.
